Having casual conversations with close friends over a cup of tea, taking a tea break to relax between busy work schedule, enjoying a solitary tea time to break away from a daily routine... From time to time, we all take a tea break under different circumstances. For this exhibition, I asked the artists to create a senga with “Tea Time” as the theme.
Coffee and tea are being enjoyed throughout the world for a variety of reasons. Sometimes as the way to relax, other times as the way to interact and communicate with others. Regardless of the reason, the practice of taking a tea/coffee break is shared universally by all cultures. The introduction of coffee and tea has presented Japanese people with, in addition to a long, rich tradition of their own distinctive tea culture, the new ways to relax, socialize and pass time.
Included in this exhibition are senga works by several artists from Bulgaria. It is interesting to see how their interpretation of “Tea Time” differ from that of Japanese artists.

　親しい仲間とお茶を飲みながら語らうひととき、忙しい仕事の合間を縫ってお茶をいただくリラックスした時間、自分だけの時間をゆっくりと楽しむティータイム…。様々な状況で人々はティータイムを過ごすのではないでしょうか？そんなひとときを剪画で表現していただこうとこのテーマを設定しました。
　コーヒーや紅茶は世界中で飲まれています。それは個人のリラックスタイムであったり、交流の場所であったり…お茶の種類や飲み方は違っても、そこに流れる時間はある意味人類共通のものであるような気がします。日本には豊かに栄えたお茶の文化がありますし、後から加わった紅茶やコーヒーもまた新たな時間の過ごし方を提案してくれています。今回はブルガリアのアーティストたちにもお茶時間を描いてもらいました。それぞれのお茶時間をご自身のお茶時間と共に楽しんでいただければ…と思います。
　長引くコロナ禍の中、心のどこかに圧迫感を持っている方も多いことでしょう。そうした中でもお茶を飲んだりアートを鑑賞したり、心の中にゆうゆうとした時間を持っておきたい…そんな願いを持ってこの作品展を開催します。

　今年後半に入って最初の作品展のテーマは「風」です。
　風は実態のない空気の動きではありますが、つながる動詞や言葉によって思い浮かべる風の姿が変わってきます。風が吹く、風そよぐ、風にまかせて、風の便り、世間の風 … 。風という自然の現象だけではなく、ものごとの動きや流れのようなものを表現することがあるからでしょうか。風には広い意味合いが含まれます。
　今回の出展作品にも、自然の風景だけではなく、風車や風鈴、舟、心象風景などさまざまなものが描かれています。風そのもの、そして風が表すもの … それぞれに描かれたものを通して、風のように動いてゆくものを感じていただけるのではないかと思います。
　様々な価値観が急速に変化してゆく今、風のように流れ、動いてゆく自由も失わずにいたいと考えています。

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word mountain, the theme for our latest exhibition?
While you may at first associate it with clear and specific visual imageries, it can be interpreted in a variety of ways aesthetically depending on the artists’ perspective. The artistic expression of mountains requires each artist to first settle on his/her viewpoint. Do I want to focus on flowers that bloom in mountains or the view of distant mountains? Or how I feel when I’m walking through a mountain?
I chose “Mountain’s Calling” as the artistic theme to prompt you to think about nostalgia, yearning, fear and other feelings you may have towards mountains. I believe both artists and viewers have their own mountain stories to tell.
I hope to provide opportunities for artists to reveal and share such personal stories with their viewers through this exhibition.
