"Timeless Patterns for All Seasons"
Exhibition Date: Wednesday October 7th ~ Saturday October 31st, 2026
Gallery Hours: Wed~Sat, 12PM~6PM Closed Sun~Tue

In Japan, a rich culture of dyeing and patterns has been passed down since ancient times. The diverse patterns, born from familiar things such as seasonal flowers and plants, natural landscapes, and geometric shapes, add color to everyday life.
For this exhibition, “senga” (paper-cutting art) artists designed the motifs and cut the stencils. Then, with the cooperation of Tokyo Wazome, we dyed "half-tenugui" (compact cotton cloths) using the “chusen” dyeing technique. By combining the art of “senga”—defined by the act of cutting—with the craft of “chusen”—defined by the art of dyeing—we have created a rich, expressive quality unique to fabric, distinct from that of “washi” paper.
We hope you enjoy these half-size tenugui (Japanese hand towels) created using traditional techniques and modern sensibilities, based on the art of paper cutting.
Thank you so much for visiting our gallery.

"The Sea and Life and ..."
Exhibition Date: Wednesday June 10th ~ Saturday June 27th, 2026
Gallery Hours: Wed~Sat, 12PM~6PM Closed Sun~Tue

It is said that all life on Earth originated in the sea. Starting with tiny bacteria, then simple organisms like plankton, and finally insects and fish—they have evolved over long periods of time, and even today, the ocean is home to a vast array of living creatures including mammals such as whales, countless varieties of fish, crustaceans, and diverse forms of marine vegetation.
The creatures that live in the sea are the theme of this exhibition. The subject matter includes not only creatures that actually live in the sea, but also imaginary creatures and people involved with the ocean. Each artist selected a subject that evokes a sense of vitality and created their work using their own unique methods.
As summer approaches, enjoy the vast ocean and the world of life that inhabits it.

"Matsuri – Festa"
Exhibition Date: Wednesday May 13th ~ Saturday May 30th, 2026
Gallery Hours: Wed~Sat, 12PM~6PM Closed Sun~Tue

Matsuri, or festa/festival, is held throughout Japan and across the world. From small festivals held in the grounds of village shrine to celebrate a good harvest and flower festivals welcoming a new spring season to a grand celebration to praise the gods, they are ubiquitous in every culture. Typically represented by beautifully adorned alters, chariots of gods, masks, music and fancy costumes, the day of festival is a special occasion we all eagerly look forward to.
In this exhibition, our artists recreated various festival scenes in senga such as the famous Nebuta Matsuri attracting a huge cloud and family-celebrated festivals like the Doll Festival, all deeply embedded in people’s memory. I hope you will enjoy the messages conveyed in each artwork as well as curiosity-inducing lively festival scenes.
Thank you.

"Flowers / Blooming"
Exhibition Date: Wednesday March 19th ~ Saturday April 13th, 2026
Gallery Hours: Wed~Sat, 12PM~6PM Closed Sun~Tue

For our annual March exhibition, we customarily propose a spring-related theme. This year, “Flowers*Blooming,” a combination of images of spring flowers that come to the minds of artists and the word “blooming,” was chosen to suggest the inclusion of not just still images of flowers but also those in different stages of blooming and the artists’ memories of blooming flowers as main creative motifs.
“Flowers*Blooming” also reflects our daily-life experiences. In Japan, we’d say, “Sakura-saku (Cherry blossoms bloom)” when a student is accepted into the school of his/her choice or “Hana-hiraku (Flower blooms)” to admire those who have achieved high level of skills in their crafts. I am grateful to all participating artists for creating senga based on their own interpretations of the theme, “Flowers*Blooming.”
I hope you will enjoy the flower-blooming spring season along with the world of blossoming flowers depicted through senga.
Thank you very much for visiting Senga Art & Space.
